Residents interested in participating in an advisory group to make recommendations on how to redraw Tulare County's Supervisorial district boundaries can learn more at a public forum on Tuesday, Feb. 22, District Three Supervisor Phil Cox announced at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting.
“I want this to be a non-political process where all residents have an opportunity to have their voice heard,” Supervisor Cox said.
The public forum – open to residents from throughout Tulare County - will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. inside the Visalia City Council’s chambers at 707 W. Acequia Ave. Visalia, CA 93291.
At the forum, attendees will hear a presentation on how the redistricting process works, what the requirements are to serve on the committee, and how to apply for the advisory committee. County staff will attend to answer questions.
Supervisor Cox’s announcement followed a presentation made to the Board of Supervisors which established the creation of a 2011 Redistricting Advisory Committee and guidelines to follow. The Board of Supervisors approved the process unanimously.
Supervisorial districts are redrawn every ten years based on population counts collected by the United States Census. The 2010 Census date will be released April 1, 2011.
The Redistricting Advisory Committee is charged with developing criteria to be applied during the redistricting process and developing proposals to be presented to the Board of Supervisors. The Committee will also conduct outreach meetings in various parts of Tulare County to solicit public input. The Redistricting Advisory Committee will present their final report to the Board of Supervisors by August 1, 2011.
Interested individuals can obtain a Redistricting Advisory Committee application on the Tulare County website at www.co.tulare.ca.us. Applicants must be registered voters and apply to represent the district in which they live. The deadline to turn in applications is March 8, 2011.
