Slick Rock Student Film Festival to Feature New County Tourism Category

February 18, 2011

The Slick Rock Student Film Festival, the San Joaquin Valley’s premier student film competition, has added a Tulare County tourism category.

Participants who enter the tourism-related Come Play! "advertisement" category have a chance to earn a Hitachi G-Technology hard drive and have their entry featured on prime-time television and multiple County websites. Students are being asked to produce a 30-second advertisement that encourages viewers to explore scenic attractions in Tulare County.

Tulare County Film Commissioner and Tourism Manager Eric Coyne said he is seeking the creativity of young people to compliment the new-look of the County tourism sites www.discovertularecounty.com and www.tularecountyemap.com.

"Our residents are this county's best tourism officials ... most everybody who lives here can think of three or four 'must see' places to visit or things to do in our County," Coyne said. "Our intent with this contest is to provide an outlet for creative youth to help promote our county, and at the same time foster this creativity into a visual arts medium."

The Tulare County Film Commission is committed to helping Slick Rock continue to grow its educational outreach to aspiring youth. Now in its eighth year, the Slick Rock Student Film Festival drew more than 230 entries in 2010 from youth in grades 6-12 enrolled in 46 schools throughout Merced, Madera, Mariposa, Fresno, Kern, Kings and Tulare counties. Slick Rock film categories include: Advertisement, Animation, Documentary, Foreign Film, Music Video, Public Service Announcement and 5-minute Action/Drama Blockbuster.

Come Play! entries must include the Tulare County tourism website www.discovertularecounty.com and logo, mention the "Come Play! Have an Adventure!" promotional slogan. Entries should encourage viewers to experience the scenic wonders of Tulare County -- such as the Giant Sequoias, local, state or national parks and museums, and be 30 seconds in length.

"The festival has always made an effort to connect kids to their communities, and contests like this help us achieve that goal," said Scott Smith, Slick Rock Student Film Festival Commissioner.

Films must be submitted through the Slick Rock Film Festival portal www.slickrockfestival.org between March 1, 2011 and April 15, 2011. An entry form must be completed and submitted by the advisor between March 1, 2011 and April 15, 2011.
