Today the Board of Supervisors and Tulare County Fire Chief Charlie Norman honored Margaret Wells for her heroic efforts to save a women from a burning house.
Here's Margaret's story:
On August 2, 2017 at approximately 8:48 am the Tulare County Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the community of London. Upon arrival they found a house that was approximately 80% involved in the fire.
It is during this incident that Margaret Wells, employee with the Tulare County Ag Commissioner’s Office, was able to spring into action and assist with the rescue on an occupant in the burning building.
Ms. Wells was working in the area of New London when she saw smoke. At the scene, she was informed by children outside a burning house that a female was still inside and without hesitation Margaret Wells went around to the back of the home breaking down a fence to gain access to a back window where she found the female occupant had tried to escape.
Weakened by smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion, the female occupant was unable to exit the building. Ms. Wells pulled her from the burning home and with the help of bystanders was able to assist the female to safety.
After completing the daring rescue, Ms. Wells identified one of the children without shoes quickly gave him her shoes to prevent him from injuring himself.
The actions of Margaret Wells were very heroic in the face of an extremely hazardous situation. She exemplifies a Good Samaritan, and the Tulare County Fire Department along with the Board of Supervisors, thank and commend her selfless rescue efforts in preventing the loss of a life.
