Visalia Branch Library Summer Reading Program, Reading Takes You Everywhere – Tween & Teens

Tulare County Library hosts its annual Summer Reading Program, beginning June 12 through July 21, 2018, offers activities for tweens and teens. . This year’s theme, Reading Takes You Everywhere, gives tweens, ages 10-13, and teens, ages 14-18, a chance to explore the world through reading. You are invited to participate with free activities and prizes.

At the Visalia Branch Library, youth may sign up throughout the program with pre-registration beginning Thursday, June 7th to Saturday, June 9th in the Homework Center and events happening throughout the Library. Participants read for prizes, which may include candy bars, unicorn poo, beach balls, book bags, squishies, gift cards, games, DVDs, and books!

Here are the events the Visalia Library has planned for you. Thirteen year olds may participate in either the tween or teen program.

Tweens

  • Tween Scavenger Hunt – Friday, June 15 at 3:00 pm

Test your knowledge with an epic scavenger hunt.

  • Tween Yoga & Movie Day – Friday, June 29 at 3:00 pm

Instructor Michelle Miller teaches a yoga class with stretches, flows, and poses inspired by the book and movie A Wrinkle in Time. The film is rated PG.   

Tween Yoga & Crafts – Friday, July 13 at 3:00 pm

Enjoy a fun afternoon of art journaling with Amy Figueroa and yoga with Michelle Miller!

Teens

  • Teen Book vs Movie Club – Saturday, June 16 at 2:00 pm

Discuss the book IT by Stephen King, and watch the movie, which israted R.  Which is scarier?

  • Virtual Reality & Board Games – Fridays, June 22 and July 20 at 4:00 pm 

Create in 3D in Medium, artwork in Quill, and travel worldwide with Google Earth in Virtual Reality!  Ages, 13+ may use the Oculus Rift. First come, first served. Enjoy playing board and card games with your friends!

  • Create An Original Character (OC) Workshop - Saturday, June 30 at 1:00 pm

Draw and create original comic book characters with local anime artist Araceli.

  • Poetry Workshop – Friday, July 6 at 3:00 pm

Acclaimed poets Tim Z. Hernandez and Dana Gioia will provide a poetry writing workshop, followed by a poetry reading.

  • Teen Art Workshop – Saturday, July 14 at 1:00 pm 

Coloring, paneling, and drawing techniques with local artist Araceli! All supplies provided. 

Don’t forget Lunch at the Library every Tuesday - Friday from 12:30 - 1:30 pm throughout the summer at the Visalia Library. Youth, under 18 eat free. Lunches include fruit, vegetables, milk, and sandwiches.
