County Establishes New Veteran Advisory Committee

County Establishes New Veteran Advisory Committee

The Tulare County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday, June 25, 2019 to approve the creation of The Tulare County Veteran Advisory Committee. Its purpose is to advise and assist the County Health & Human Services Agency with ongoing efforts to enhance current services, develop new services, allow for more collaboration with the community, provide a higher level of customer service, and improve the quality of services provided to Tulare County Veterans and their families.

“Veterans are a vital part of our community. Tulare County is dedicated to serving our veterans after they have served all of us,” shared Board Chairman, Kuyler Crocker. “Creating a committee specifically for Veterans ensures the Tulare County Board of Supervisors will prioritize their care. This enables a public process to see how Tulare County is serving this community, as well as, seeking opportunities to improve our services.”

The Tulare County Veteran Advisory Committee will consist of seven members:

  • Five (5) members having served on active duty in a branch of the armed services shall be appointed as district representatives, one from each of the five Supervisorial Districts in the County;
  • Two (2) community partner members that provide services to Veterans; and
  • One (1) County Supervisor to serve as a non-voting member. All members are appointed by the Board of Supervisors, serving three year terms.

The Veteran Advisory Committee will be charged with assessing local services available to Veterans and develop proposed strategies to address unmet needs. Additionally, with the concurrence of the Board of Supervisors, the Veteran Advisory Committee will advocate for increased action to improve funding opportunities for Veteran services in the County.

Tulare County currently has a Veteran’s Service Office dedicated to serving Tulare County veterans and their families.  The Veteran’s Services Office strives to assist veterans who may be unaware of the services and benefits they are eligible to receive.  The Advisory Committee is an additional resource to provide a voice for Veterans and offer valuable information to the Department in delivering services to Veterans.
