One Town, One Book Program at the Three Rivers Branch Library
The Tulare County Library’s Three Rivers Branch is teaming up with the National Park Service, Sequoia Parks Conservancy, and the Friends of the Three Rivers Library for One Town, One Book to Three Rivers throughout September and October, 2019. The Three Rivers community is invited to read In Search of the Canary Tree: The Story of a Scientist, A Cypress, and A Changing World by Lauren Oakes. This is a story of ecologist Lauren Oakes’ investigation into climate change and its direct effects on Alaska’s forests. Oakes writes a “surprisingly hopeful story of one woman's search for resiliency in a warming world.” Starting August 13, free copies of the book are available at the Three Rivers Branch Library on a first come, first serve basis. Participants are encouraged to start reading. .
Throughout September and October, join us for activities around this fascinating book. The Learn About Forest & Think is a future presentation, held on Thursday, September 5 at 6:30pm-7:30pm at the Three Rivers Branch Library. The activity will open with a short presentation from Sequoia National Park’s Christy Brigham as she explains how our climate has already changed the environment. Afterward, participants have an opportunity to explore with species experts and scientific specialists. The scientists will introduce participants to the natural history of our forests and how these forests are affected by climate change.
Two book discussions tack place on Thursday, September 19 6:30pm-7:30pm and Thursday, October 10 6:30pm-7:30pm. We invite the Three Rivers community to participate in one of these facilitated book discussion.
Check the Three Rivers Branch Facebook page for an event in late September or early October, when the National Park Service and Sequoia Conservancy present Tribal members from the Chumash and Wukchumni Yokut Tribes talk about their perspective on Sierra forests and how native peoples continue to use and care for forests today. This second presentation focuses on local tribal connection to the land and how these relationships are affected by climate change. Once again, the activity will be held at the Three Rivers Branch Library.
Our final presentation is an author visit from Lauren Oakes. On Thursday, October 24 at 6:30pm-7:30pm, Lauren will discuss her book, In Search of the Canary Tree: The Story of a Scientist, A Cypress, and A Changing Word. The audience will have an opportunity to ask Lauren questions followed by a book signing. Information on the location of this event will be available at the Library and on their Facebook page.
